1 – Choose a pen suitable for the page.
Fineliners are great for detail, brush pens cover area quickly, gel pens give vibrant colors and special effects whilst alcohol based pens, like Copic, allow you to blend pen colors.
There are a huge variety of pen types and brands available so take a look through work from other people and see what type of pens they are using to create the finish to their coloring page.
2 – Test colors before you use them.
Does the pen bleed? Do the colors work together? Is the pen running out?
Creating a quick swatch of your colors on a piece of scrap paper or the back page of a coloring book will give you a good idea of whether your colors will look good when you apply them to your coloring page.
3 – Buy the best quality of pen you can afford.
Don’t break the bank … there are plenty of mid range coloring pens that give fantastic results.
The ink often lasts longer, coverage is better and nibs are more durable and precise. Don’t break the bank though, if you are starting out there are plenty of mid range coloring pens that give fantastic results.
4 – Paper matters.
Alcohol based pens need bleed resistant paper. Felt tip pens will cause flecking on cheap paper. If you are using watercolor pencils then a thick paper is necessary.

5 – Extra dimension.
Flat coloring can produce great results, but a coloring page with texture and dimension will really stand out. Try adding highlights with a white gel pen or use a black fineliner around the edge of elements of your design to make them stand out.
Simple embellishments like swirls, hatching and stippling can provide extra interest to a coloring page. Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun!

Most of all, take your time and don’t rush. If you tackle your coloring a little at a time and don’t hurry through it you will produce much better results.
