In this post we step back in time to show you how to color psychedelic coloring pages!
When I think of psychedelia, images of hippies, The Summer of Love and The Beatles Yellow Submarines immediately spring to mind!
What do all of these things have in common? Color! Psychedelic art took its influence from the 60s and 70s; drinking in the atmosphere, music, and mind altering substances of the period and spitting out poster designs, album covers and artwork that used bright colors and wavy, repetitive or geometric patterns, to create striking artwork.
Groovy right?! Step back in time with us as we go on a coloring trip and learn how to color psychedelic coloring pages!
Find a Page
Psychedelic art often has elements of strong recurring patterns or fluid wavy forms, so any page with those kind of elements is a prime candidate for a psychedelic coloring style.
Alternatively you can give any themed coloring page a psychedelic twist with the right choice of colors or by simply embellishing the design by adding a wavy spiralled back ground to the page.
If you are still struggling to find a page to color you can download our free psychedelic coloring page here.
Pen or Pencil?
Psychedelic coloring usually means bold, bright and often contrasting colors. In some psychedelic art you will find gradients of color, like in the Cream poster above, but you will also find blocked coloring like this poster of The Beatles by Roberto Patelli.
Pencil or pens would work equally well with creating a psychedelic coloring page. Pens lend themselves more naturally to bold, block coloring, but it is equally possible to get bright colors from pencils although it does take a little more time. See our guide to coloring with pencils for an example of producing brighter colors by layering your colored pencil.
For coloring in pen, neon colors would be a good choice for psychedelic coloring pages, take a look at my neon pen mandala coloring walkthrough for an example of the colors you can get.
Choose your Color Palette
An explosion of color may be best for coloring pages that have less of a retro feel to begin with.
As you can see from some of the examples of psychedelic art, pretty much anything goes! Psychedelic color palettes are often considered bright, using numerous contrasting colors – so go for complimentary colors on your color wheel!
However there are also great examples of psychedelic rock posters from the 60s and 70s that only use two or three colors, like this brilliant psychedelic design from Wes Wilson.
In these posters, the style of the design and saturated, but contrasting, colors makes the page feel psychedelic without bombarding your senses with colors.
The choice is yours, you can go bold, bright and contrasting to give your page that rainbow explosion effect!
Alternatively, keep your color pallette limited, choose a couple of contrasting colors and take a leaf out of Wes Wilson’s design book. The latter approach works best on coloring pages with strong psychedelic design. An explosion of color may be best for coloring pages that have less of a retro feel to begin with.
Go on a Coloring Trip!
You have chosen your psychedelic coloring page, picked your favorite pens or pencils and settled on a color scheme. All that is left to do is choose your favorite psychedelic soundtrack and zone out whilst coloring your page!
I took spin at creating a quick psychedelic pattern using this page from coloring book 16, one of the weekly downloads you get when you become a member of thecoloringbook.club.
Taking my influence from the black line work in Wes Wilson’s poster I took to the page with my black fineliner.
I then chose four bright colors and set to work, you can see how the bold colors stand out against the black line work.
Not only do the colors have a distinctly psychedelic feel but I can tell you that coloring those jagged geometric shards on this coloring page soon sends you into a 60s trance too!!
